Under 11 Lions fight back to earn a draw

Saturday 27th October 2012

Crofton Saints U11 Lions v Whiteley Wanderers U11 Lions at Stubbington Recreation Ground

It was honours even in this top-of-the-table clash with the Lions having to fight very hard to keep a good Whiteley side at bay. The Lions were stunned to go two goals down in the first six minutes of play, the second conceded direct from a poorly defended corner. Midway through the first half the Lions clawed a goal back through Adam Hatton in exactly the same manner. Both sides would have been very disappointed to have conceded directly from a corner without another player touching the ball. Although a goal down at the break the Lions were definitely not out of the match.

Whiteley pressed very hard in the second half and it took some great work from Sam Blythin, in the Lions goal, to prevent the home side from going further behind. Nevertheless, the Lions were looking quite threatening themselves when going forward, and in the 11th minute of the half Josh Fox pulled the Lions level with a lofted shot from outside of the area, going in over the keeper’s head. Both sides looked capable of snatching the win but, playing below their best against a side that were better on the day, the Lions will settle for a point which keeps them three points clear at the top of the league.

Final Score:  Crofton Saints U11 Lions  2-2  Whiteley Wanderers U11 Lions

With no scheduled fixture for this coming Saturday the Lions are looking forward to their first-ever match against foreign opposition. On Saturday November 10th we will play hosts to Rushmoor Saints U11 Tigers from the North East Hants League in the 3rd Round of the Hampshire U11 Cup. Come what may, I know that the team and supporters are very much looking forward to this cup-tie.
