Mid Solent Youth League U11 Challenge Cup Quarter-Final

Waltham Wolves U11 Jets v Crofton Saints U11 Lions
at Wickham Recreation Ground

Following their crushing exit from the quarter-finals of the Hants U11 Challenge Cup, in the hands of Rushmoor Saints Tigers last week, the Lions bounced back this week to inflict a heavy defeat on Waltham Wolves Jets in the quarter-finals of the Mid Solent Youth Football League U11 Challenge Cup. The Jets fought gamely but were simply no match for the rejuvenated Lions. The visitors football was slick, incisive and always threatening and one had to ask why did they not play like that last Saturday? The answer, of course, is obvious – because the Tigers didn’t let them – and there was also some measure of complacency involved. Nevertheless, if the Lions had played half as well last Saturday, as they did this, then at least they would have gone down fighting.

Kai Sterne played exceptionally well for the Lions, persistently beating the Jets defence with his speed and trickery down the right wing, banging in four goals in the process. This was matched by Josh Fox who frequently cut through the centre of the Jets defence, and he too rattled in four goals. Harry O’Malley, Tommy Milchard and Benjamin Lolljowaheer – who had a fine match despite taking a couple of hefty knocks - chipped in with one a piece to make the final score 11-2 for the Lions.

The Lions defence generally played very well but will be disappointed to have conceded two soft goals in the second half. It was of no significance on the day but should remind the boys not to switch off and loose concentration when they are on top at the other end.
The Lions have been drawn to play at home against AFC Portchester Castles in the Semi-Finals. The Lions contested a very close match against Portchester in the league earlier in the season, winning 4-3 so this is shaping up to be a good fixture.

Final Score : Waltham Wolves U11 Jets 2 - 11 Crofton Saints U11 Lions
